Whilst we affirm Mr Maharaj’s right to defend himself and his family, we are deeply disturbed by his insistence on preventing the newspaper from publishing what is clearly in the public interest. The Freedom of Expression Institute met with the ICASA CCC and the legal representatives of the SABC on Wednesday 09 November 2011 to discuss pertinent matters relating to the black listing complaint against the SABC.
Earlier this year the High Court ruled that the complaint had to be heard afresh by the CCC after a lengthy court process. For most of this year, the CCC had no chairperson and appointed Mr Tutani as chair. We wish him all of the best with his position and thank the CCC for moving so speedily on this matter.
