A step forward for media freedom through the justice system

The Freedom of Expression Institute welcomes the decision by the Northern Gauteng High Court to allow the live broadcast of trial proceedings in the Oscar Pistorius’ case scheduled to begin on the 3rd of March, 2014. This is a landmark decision in the South African justice system and one which the FXI recognizes as a positive step in the advancement of media freedom and freedom of expression in general. The FXI is disturbed by the reaction of the ANC to the DA’s legally sanctioned march to the ruling party’s headquarters at Luthuli House on 12 February, 2014. Political parties as formations with ambitions to either retain or assume state power should lead by example as protectors, promoters and guarantors of all constitutionally enshrined rights.
