WORLD PRESS FREEDOM DAY ‘Media Freedom for a Better Future: Shaping the Post-2015 Development’

The Freedom of Expression Institute joins the world in commemorating World Press Freedom Day this year 03rd May 2014. The theme “Media Freedom for a Better Future: Shaping the Post-2015 Development Agenda” (as set out by UNESCO) is as relevant to South Africa today, as it was in 1994. The role that the media can and should be allowed to play in shaping our future cannot be overstated. As we celebrate 20 years of freedom, it is critical that we also use this opportunity to assess how far we have come on this front as a free nation. Today we reflect on how the media has played a part in building the democracy we enjoy and from this we draw lessons on how this will take our country’s development beyond the 2015 vision.   Continue reading
