The Freedom of Expression Institute (FXI) extends its heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Jeanette Minnie. Her passing marks the loss of a fearless defender of media freedom.

As the first FXI Executive Director from 1994 to 1997, Jeanette campaigned tirelessly for the removal of censorship laws, the independence and diversity of the media and access to information.

She was instrumental in the fight for a Freedom of Information Act in South Africa.

“She was an extraordinary friend and colleague, indefatigable, loving and caring. We will miss her, her good works and always charming and cheerful company,” said Raymond Louw, FXI Executive Committee member.

When Jeanette left the FXI to lobby for freedom of expression on an international scale, the Institute noted that “Her campaigning skills and experience had proven invaluable in ensuring constructive interventions by the FXI on issues pertaining to freedom of expression and access to information”.

The FXI is honoured to continue building on the legacy of her work.

Thank you. Rest in Peace Zambezi FoX!
